Water Safety for Photo Shoots | The Water Nymph

First and foremost, let me just say that this shoot was an absolute blast! I couldn’t have asked for a more adventurous model than Miranda, who fearlessly agreed to be dunked in the creek at 9:00am. With her enthusiastic spirit, we brought the Water Nymph to life in the beautiful Boulder Creek. However, we made water safety a priority for this photo shoot.

Creeks Are Cold & Move Fast

Now, when you think of creeks, you might conjure images of gentle, gurgling water. But here’s the thing: if you happen to live in a mountain town like Boulder, you’ll quickly realize that creeks can surprise you with their depth and swiftness. Luckily, Miranda is a fellow photographer and knew that this was a designated creek entry point so we felt very safe getting into the water. (Check out her amazing work here)

Of course, before diving headfirst into the shoot (pun intended), we took some important precautions. One of the first things we did was to check the water’s temperature. Let me tell you, Boulder Creek is primarily fed by snow runoff that could make a Viking shiver.

Side story: I once witnessed a woman in a bathing suit wading into the creek in the middle of February. To this day, I still wonder what the hell she was doing.

Thankfully, the recent scorching hot weather warmed the creek up considerably, and it was actually quite lovely for our Water Nymph transformation. We were also careful to move slowly through the water. The rocks get extremely slippery and there are drop offs in the water that are much deeper than the rest of the creek.

Moral of the story; if you ever find yourself asking someone to pose in a dress in a creek, make sure you’ve got your safety game on point. Research the location and understand the water conditions. And most importantly, always prioritize the well-being of your model.

I color toned this with the help of actions from The Color Lab.

The greenery is from King Soopers and cost me about $20 and her crown is made from leftover leaves from fake flowers I’ve bought in the past.

Her Story

In the sweetest water, where the lightning bugs play, you’ll find the Water Nymph basking in the blessings she bestows upon the babbling creeks and streams. Once up on a time, Oracles spent their lives looking for clarity next to her waters, children lay their locks on her alter as a sign of adulthood. Now, like all the other forgotten creatures, she waits for magic to return to the world.
