The Demon Princess & The Disappearing Gates

Location Scouting Gone Awry

When I’m prepping for a photo shoot, one of the first things I do is location scout. I carefully review my list of preferred locations, searching for the perfect backdrop that will complement and enhance the concept I have in mind. However, sometimes even the most meticulously planned photo shoots can encounter unexpected obstacles. That’s what happened with the Demon Princess and the Disappearing Gates.

Adapting to Change

For this photo shoot, I imagined photographing her in front of a pair of elaborate marble gates that used to stand in front of a chateau-style mansion that once took up most of Belmar Park in Denver. I fell in love with the aging marble and tarnished golden accents the first time I saw them. When I starting thinking about the Demon Princess’ story, I knew the gates would be perfect for her. I was super excited to see them again on my way to the park, imagining how I would work them into the shoot.

But as I walked up to where the gates should have been, my heart sank. My gates had up and vanished. I thought I was losing my mind for a minute so I pulled up the pictures I had taken during my previous visit, confirming that the gates had indeed been there less than 6 months ago. It felt like a cruel joke. As though an actual demonic princess had conspired against me.

After a few choice curse words and a small panic attack, I took a deep breath and assessed the situation. I’ve learned that adaptability and flexibility are crucial traits for a photographer so I let go of the gates and assessed the surroundings with fresh eyes.

Finding A New Spot

Belmar Park has so many interesting areas and buildings so I explored a little, searching for alternative settings that could still capture the essence of the story I wanted to tell. I remembered that there was an area with vintage farm equipment and a big red barn. It wasn’t the grandeur of the chateau gates but it had some great textures that I knew I could work with.

With Abigail, my amazing Demon Princess, already on her way and the clock ticking, I made the decision to embrace the unexpected turn of events and adapt my concept. My “Possessed By The Demon Princess” narrative took on a new dimension and I’m really happy with the results.

As we started photographing, I realized that sometimes, the obstacles we encounter lead us to unexpected treasures. The barn’s worn textures and the vintage farm equipment provided a complementary juxtaposition to the demonic princess’s eerie presence.

This was a great reminder that even when our plans go awry, creativity and resilience can transform the unexpected into something extraordinary. As a photographer, I embrace the challenges that come my way, knowing that they can lead to remarkable outcomes. Possessed By The Demon Princess may not have followed the original script, but it became a testament to the power of adaptation and the beauty of embracing the unexpected.

p.s. – any and all pets are welcome at photo shoots! Abigail couldn’t leave her sweet kitten at home so she got to have her modeling debut.
